Jack Pierce, make up artist on Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, and others

The excellent radio show Cinephobia, broadcast out of CKLN in Toronto,  just ran a contest to give away some tickets to a screening of a 35mm print of  the 1931 FRANKENSTEIN! I didn’t win the contest, but in answering their contest question, I was reminded of the incredible work of Jack Pierce who did the make up for Boris Karloff in Frankenstein, and Lon Chaney, Jr. in The Wolf Man, among other films. There’s an interesting read about Pierce at Wikipedia.

I directed a short film/commercial a little while back which featured our own “Frankenstein” and you can watch it below:

That make up is not easy! We could have used his help on the set! Jack Pierce, RIP.

Viddy well!

New Album Preview – Peter Gabriel’s Scratch My Back

I’ve just had my first listen to songs from Peter Gabriel’s new album Scratch My Back and I love it. It’s deep, rich, beautiful, sad, joyous and very touching. His music hits me in an emotional place and has often brought tears to my eyes; this album is no exception.

It’s orchestrated and is all cover songs! Gabriel does songs from artists who agreed to cover one of his songs in return. Not what I was expecting, but it’s surely an innovative album – not a surprise from an innovator like Gabriel. There are some interesting vocal effects that make me think of early Gabriel work from his solo albums.

He’s been one of my favourite artists for many, many years. I’ve seen him live a few times too – the first time in the 80’s on the Shock The Monkey tour. He’s on tour this year in support of his new album, with an orchestra, and billed as with “no drums or guitars”.

A blog and site I like – Tom Green

Tom Green’s got a great thing going on.

You may remember him from his TV shows (he’s had a few: from his humble beginnings on Rogers Cable TV in Ottawa, to MTV, to the Comedy Channel, to his own Internet show), or the several movies he’s been in (most notably Freddie Got Fingered).

Tom’s a really funny comedian, an innovative broadcaster and is inspiring (he’s overcome a lot of hard knocks in his life, including cancer).

He’s now on a big stand-up comedy tour…if/when he comes this way, I’d like to see him!

Check out his blog and his great “Web-o-vision” where he’s built a talk-show set in his living room!
