Putting your art out there

I’ve met a few great artists of different types that no one is ever going to enjoy their work. They refuse to really put it out there into the world. I’m talking about artists who work in many mediums: painting, writing and recording music, writing fiction, and taking pictures.

Why they don’t make the effort could be any number of reasons, but I think the chief one of them is likely fear of rejection. It’s not easy to put your art on display for the world and take any comments that come. But I think it’s better to still do it anyway, as then you’ll be sharing your artistic gift with the world, and the world could do with some more great art.

I talked to these artists, even tried to help some of them get their work out there, but in the end they didn’t. I feel fortunate that I got to appreciate their art at least, by knowing them. It’s not that their talents were any less than any other artists who have their work in the public eye, it’s just that they lacked the drive, or the nerve, to let their work go out into the world. I think that’s a sad thing.

But it’s their choice in the end, and if doing the art gives them satisfaction, that may be enough – but some of them have even given up on their art, as they were discouraged by the commercial aspect of it all! I’m not sure what to say to that, except try again when you feel like it.

I wish I could show you some of the art I’ve seen and experienced that’s never been on wide release, some of it was really stunning! I’m sure the same can be said for the work of many other artists who are private, or only show their work in limited venues.

Just think of all the amazing art out there waiting to be discovered!

Inspiration: David Lynch – Twin Peaks season 3

David Lynch, the filmmaker, painter, photographer, fine artist, coffee appreciator, and inner peace/meditation foundation founder is a real inspiration.

Later this month (on May 21st for you Peaks freaks, like me), season 3 of Twin Peaks begins which consists of 18 hours of new episodes, picking up from where the TV series left off in 1991 – about 26 years ago!

This new series is quite a feat for anyone to direct (and co-write, with Mark Frost), and more screen time than many directors have for their entires careers! What an accomplishment for David Lynch! And he’s 71 years old, too! Wow, BOB, wow! (Fans of the show will get that BOB reference.)

The date of 26 years ago also makes the prediction of the character of Laura Palmer in Twin Peaks true, when she said words to the effect of: “I’ll see you again in 25 years” – which was when season 3 was being made.

David Lynch has been a source of inspiration to me for many years, in both my creative endeavours and my life in general. So, thank you David Lynch, and I can’t wait to see the new season of Twin Peaks!

Leonard Cohen’s Change of Cosmic Address

cohen-bw

Thank you, Leonard Cohen, from the mourning lovers you consoled with sympathy, the iced hearts you warmed with tears; thank you for the hope you gave to those lost, for showing the way to something more, out of the darkness.

Thank you from your fans (I count myself as one) for your beautiful, truthful music and words, the inspiration you gave to other artists to follow their paths at their heart’s urgings, and to spiritual seekers to follow their soul’s longings. Thank you for the kindness you shared with those lucky enough to cross your path.

I crossed your path, in a way, when I received a personal letter from you many years ago, in response to a book of my poetry I had sent you. That gesture of yours told me a lot about your depth of character and respect for other artists. That you, such an esteemed writer, took the time and effort to respond to me meant a great deal to the young writer I was at the time. And it still does.

I hope you are able to read this now, Leonard, and that you are happy and in a better place. We can play your music and read your words when we miss you, but nothing will ever replace you.

Thank you again for all you gave, and see you around.

Rescueplan – coming soon!

Rescueplan: D.U.M.B.s (Deep Underground Military Bases) – Book 3 is being edited, now. I’m in the final stretch of it, and the book will be available soon!

Here’s some teasers:

“What the hell are those?” Frank stepped back.
As the “spiders” drew closer, Leon could make out that they were soldiers encased in metal exoskeletons, who wore the armoured cages like a suit of clothing. As they moved their arms and legs, the metal arms and legs of the exoskeletons moved with them, mirroring them. He could see laser guns mounted at multiple points on the exoskeletons, and missiles, making them deadly machines, not just for the greatly increased strength and speed they gave the operators, but for the deadly firepower they had.
Frank’s face glowed, his eyes wide. “I hope we get to play with some of those!”
