Full moon + lunar eclipse this Saturday – June 26th!

The full moon occurs this Saturday, June 26 at 11:31 a.m. EST, and the lunar eclipse happens this Saturday, June 26 at about 7:30 a.m. EST (if my calculations are correct!). We won’t see much of the eclipse in the eastern part of Canada where I am, but its influence is sure to be felt!

There is an interesting write-up of it here: http://earthsky.org/tonight/americas-partial-lunar-eclipse-before-dawn-june-26 and also here:  http://www.astrogrrl.com/2010/06/eclipsed-full-moon-grand-cross-june-26.html

Happy Summer – Summer Solstice! The longest day of the year! (northern hemisphere)

Today is the first day of Summer…the Summer Solstice – the Sun at the height of its power for the year (in the northern hemisphere).

What’s the Summer Solstice? For those who don’t know, today is the day with the longest time of daylight: the longest day of the year! Today is the day when the sun is the highest in the sky, in the northern hemisphere. In the southern hemisphere, welcome Winter!

From here on in, the days are getting shorter for us northerners, while you southerners will notice your days getting longer.

FIFA "ambush marketing" stunt gets women arrested

I got a smile when I saw this picture and news story.

36 Dutch women dressed in orange mini-dresses attended the FIFA Netherlands-Denmark game in Johannesburg and caused quite a stir. That’s a pretty novel idea and very easy on the eyes, so what’s the issue? It seems they were part of a marketing campaign for a Dutch beer company  – Bavaria. This “free” form of marketing that has been dubbed “ambush marketing.”  The two organizers of the stunt were arrested.

But, the last thing that comes to my mind is having anyone arrested! It’s a strange world at times…! See the videos below. Fun!

Oil spill "vacuum cleaner" from Kevin Costner and his brother’s company to be used in the Gulf!

A few years ago, actor Kevin Costner and his scientist brother perfected a centrifugal “vacuum cleaner” device that can purify the water from oil spills. Their technology has already been used in an oil spill in Japan. Coster spent $24 million of his own money on the venture. They are working to get permission to use their devices right now in the Gulf.

Let’s hope this works!

Traffic City – excerpt from "A Conspicuous Medium" chapbook

Here is a poem of mine that is an excerpt from my collection of poetry published in 1996 by The Necropolis Press, called ” A Conspicuous Medium.”  I will be releasing a new edition soon in e-book format, and maybe in paper format too – we’ll see.

Traffic City by David Sloma

Traffic City,
all in a jam.
No need to hurry;
history will claim us all.

In Traffic City
noise rules supreme.
Traffic City
chokes a fragile dream.

In Traffic City,
grow good young ones,
in body surely:
mind has yet to become.

Traffic City strut,
the flow of bodies and cars never stops.
Metalflesh creeps along vein-blood roads,
they never stop moving into the Grid.

Gulf Oil Spill – Ways to help

What can we do about this disaster? If close by, perhaps direct help. If not close by, then prayer and donations of money and support.

There’s a list of ways you can donate funds to relief organizations and wildlife rescues here: fieldnotes.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2010/05/01/2291388.aspx

May the Gulf area recover from this, and with loving care, thrive even better than before in the future.
