New Novel: “The Key to the Lock”

Dnierf Lem, a young bookstore clerk, finds a book that’s not supposed to exist. In it are clues that pull him into a mysterious scavenger hunt with big prizes and big trouble, the end of which is unknown.

But is it just someone rich playing an elaborate game? It seems so, but Dnierf isn’t so sure. Curiosity, and the lure of money and adventure, drives him forward from his mundane life, even after his life is put at risk.

He’ll find there’s much more to this than a game, with travel to exotic lands and mystical, even occult, spiritual experiences – if he can keep ahead of those trying to kill him and his new companions along the way.

Writing: Staying Focused in the Summer

A blog of a writer I read frequently is that of Dean Wesley Smith. He’s been a professional writer for a long while now, about forty years I believe, and has some good insights to share about being a writer.

One of those is his observation that during the summer months, which he calls the “Time of Great Forgetting,” many writers abandon their writing to do summer things, only to come back to writing in the fall months shocked at what they didn’t accomplish.

I can say that his observation has been accurate in my writing life, but only in the past. I’m no longer plagued with the “Time of Great Forgetting,” as I’ve made my writing so much a part of my life that I’d miss it if I didn’t do it daily. And I do miss it, on those rare occasions that I don’t get to do it on a given day.

Here are some of the ways in which I’ve made writing part of my daily life and tools I’ve used to accomplish that. Some of these I’ve learned from Dean, I’m sure; others came from personal experience and from other writers:

  • Try to write at the same time every day.
  • Write daily, no matter if you can only squeeze in a little time or a few words – something is always better than nothing. It keeps the writing “muscle” in shape and keeps the stories flowing.
  • Set goals for your writing in the form of words per day, per month, and per year. It’s amazing when you look back at your progress, or lack of!
  • Keep a log of your written words. This way it’s easy to see where you’ve slipped or where you’ve advanced.
  • Always keep learning in regards to writing, on the craft side and on the buisness side, through following writing blogs, reading books on writing, watching instructional videos, listening to podcasts, and taking courses. This will keep your mind focused on writing, especially during those times you might not have a lot to devote to the actual writing.

Dean’s got a great blog for writers, and he offers workshops and video lectures, too: http://www.deanwesleysmith.com

My New Balance Shoes Journey

I just recently bought my 3rd pair of New Balance shoes.

I stick with them because they are the best shoes I’ve ever had!

The reason I found these shoes in the first place is that beyond being good-looking shoes that got good reviews, I wanted something to help with my flat feet condition. If you have this, you know that sometimes it’s hard to get decent shoes to help with standing or walking for long periods, which can be painful.

I wear custom orthotics in my shoes, have since high school, when I was getting a lot of knee and hip pain that the orthotics solved instantly.  While these do help with flat feet conditions, they don’t provide much in the way of cushioning. Also, they can take up a lot of room in a shoe, causing the top or sides of the shoe to be uncomfortable, so it’s not easy to get a good fit.

When I tried out my first pair of New Balance running shoes, they was amazing! I got a model that was specifically made for people with issues like flat feet! They have such things like roll-bars in them (and a lot more), to help with foot issues and movement problems. What a revelation!

I didn’t know such shoes existed off the shelf and certainly not in running/walking shoe models. They were a boon to my feet, ankles, knees, and hips (which can all go out of alignment due to foot issues). I could be on my feet for far longer with them, walk farther, and be in great comfort doing it. My balance is better with them and walking is more of a joy than ever.

Yes, they can be seen to be on the expensive side, (mine were about $175 in USD at the time of writing this) and while I don’t think it’s always true that you get what you pay for,  in this case it is true. These are quality shoes that last at least 3 years, in my experience.

Those first pair I wore into the ground. They were blue and white. I would have gotten another pair, as they were great (also made in the USA and vegan!), but they were sadly discontinued. So, I switched to another model that still had the roll-bars and such, this time in a cool black (also made in USA).

The 2nd pair I had for 3 years, before they started to show real signs of wear and lost some of their cushioning (I still wear them sometimes for light duty, as they are nicely broken in and still comfortable). 3 years of hard use! I wore these shoes pretty much daily. That was true of the 1st pair I owned as well.

When the 2nd pair were due to be replaced I didn’t even hesitate for my 3rd pair: I bought the same model!

I’ll add some pictures and a video of them soon so you can see how they held up, but I just wanted to leave you with a link for now to Amazon; if you use it to buy your shoes (or anything else after you click the link) I get a small cut of the sale, so please use my link if you are going to buy something on Amazon. Thanks!

THE MIGRAINES – new story

The migraine headache came on as soon as I woke up. I wasn’t sure what caused it, I never am. Though I had my suspicions, like my nightmares and the strange creatures there.

My new story THE MIGRAINES is now available from Amazon as an ebook: https://amzn.to/2uuA05b

It will be exclusive to Amazon for 3 months in Kindle Unlimited, but will make its way to the other ebook sites in time.

Harlan Ellison – Memories and Lessons

Harlan Ellison was one of the first professional writers I ever met.

It was in the 80’s, during one of Harlan’s lecture tour stops. I was a wide-eyed teen, voracious reader (especially of fantasy and sci-fi), and also a beginning/aspiring writer. His talk to the large crowd was wild and entertaining, filled with outrageous stories – here was a real celebrity writer in our midst! His admonitions on the hardships of the writing life were not enough to deter me, but they did shock me at the time (I found out years later he was mostly right).

The highlight of the show was when he read one of his new stories! That put me in awe, not just because I got to hear a wonderful story from a master writer in his own voice, but he said afterward that it was “just how it came out of the typewriter.” No rewriting! He explained that he was able to do this after being a writer for over 25 years. I thought he might have been embellishing about his skill slightly, as some of his tales seemed a little far-fetched, but now I’m not so sure. I’ve learned from him and other long-term writers that this sort of thing is possible; I’ve even had my own experiences with it.

After the show, I lined up to get a book signed by Harlan and also got his infamous barbed wit/temper directed at me! Seems I was being a little too much the acolyte writer as I hung around at his elbow after getting my book signed, wanting to bask in his presence and collect any pearls of writing wisdom he might choose to bestow on those crowding around him. So he shooed me away like a fly! I believe he even said “Go away, shoo!” I can chuckle about it now, but at the time I was a bit miffed. Ah, Harlan!

Harlan Ellison gave me someone to emulate, showing that the dream I had, to also be a writer, was possible. For that I’m thankful, and also for the many stories of his I enjoyed and dreamed on.

The Demon Robots – new story

The robots were made under the direction of demons who possessed people.

Then the demons inhabited the robots.

We who still felt we were alive, not just simply meat bags to serve the machines, gathered under the city to plot our rebellion, seeking ways to take out the robots before they took us all out.

I had a mission: find the man with the robot-destroying weapon and help him to save humanity.

My new story The Demon Robots is now available from Amazon as an ebook: https://amzn.to/2xJePBb  and in paperback: https://amzn.to/2M82ny8. It will be exclusive to Amazon for 3 months in Kindle Unlimited, but will make its way to the other ebook sites in time.
